I was aware that some of my favorite composers were gay, several of them French, but when I discovered that Erik Satie was strongly rumored to be homosexual, I couldn't help myself.
I did a bit of research, and as I had expected, I discovered a host of French composers that were all most assuredly gay, beyond reasonable doubt. So what's the big deal? There is no big deal, rather it's simply intriguing to learn of such presence in a cultural mecca like France.
Gay French Composers:
Debussy, Claude
Lully, Jean-Baptiste
Poulenc, Francis
Ravel, Maurice
Saint-Saëns, Camille
Satie, Erik
... and let's not forget Chopin, Frédéric, even though he's only half French (by parentage and residence.
